Here's how it's done.
Cordillera Azul National Park was established on May 21, 2001, under the government of former Peruvian President Valentín Paniagua, with the aim of protecting biodiversity, unique species, ecosystems and geological formations, and supporting the sustainable development of the population living in the area surrounding the park, which includes many indigenous communities. Cordillera Azul National Park has a participatory management model. This management model involves the Peruvian state through the National Service for State Protected Natural Areas (SERNANP) and CIMA, a private non-profit organization. Both institutions signed a management contract for the period 2008 - 2028 to jointly manage the park. Thanks to this approach and the admirable work of conservation experts, park rangers, scientists and technical staff, the deforestation of more than 67,000 hectares has been avoided, the functionality of the landscape has been restored, and biodiversity and natural resources have been preserved, allowing the promotion of sustainable productive activities to improve the quality of life of families and communities. The excellent conservation status of Cordillera Azul National Park is remarkable, standing at 99.95%. Since the creation of the Cordillera Azul National Park, all indigenous communities residing in the buffer zone have been consulted and recognized, as it has always been important for the Peruvian state to involve the indigenous population in order to respect their ancestral rights to use the territory and provide them with access to the benefits that arise from the conservation of the park.
