Agriculture and CO₂ emissions

How is CO₂ produced in agriculture?

Nitrous oxide is mainly produced by the application of fertilizers that are rich in nitrogen. These emissions can vary greatly depending on the type and amount of fertilizer used and the specific growing conditions.
Methane is mainly produced by the digestion of ruminants (such as cattle), which emit large amounts of methane through their unique digestive systems. These gases have a much stronger climate-damaging effect than CO₂; methane has a global warming potential of up to 30 times higher than CO₂ over a period of 100 years.

The challenge is to significantly reduce emissions in agriculture without jeopardizing the global food supply. Some strategies include:
