Investments into Nature – Biodiversity Credits in Action

By Max Sabitzer

With the launch of our own new project "The Wild Impact Club", we want to offer you a few insights behind the scenes. To ensure a long-term impact and verified rainforest protection, our new project now offers Biodiversity Credits! But what is actually behind this system and how does it support biodiversity?

What are Biodiversity Credits?

Biodiversity credits are a verifiable, quantifiable and tradeable financial instrument that rewards positive nature and biodiversity outcomes (e.g. protection of natural habitats, species and ecosystems, renaturation). They are a tool for combining economic development with biodiversity conservation. Through the creation and sale of biodiversity units over a fixed period, a certain nature-friendly and conservatory land management can be guaranteed. This helps invest both into local economies and safe natural habitats.

The only problem: biodiversity can be hard to measure and you can not really "compare" the values of different ecosystems. For this, different companies use different approaches to evaluate the local ecosystem and monitor positive changes. According to the "No Net Loss" principle, credits can only be sold when there's measurable positive impact on biodiversity (e.g. species numbers, deforestation rates or habitat size). When investing in Biodiversity Credits it's therefore important to check how your project of choice is being monitored to ensure the largest positive impact on nature. Biodiversity credits are currently on the rise and there's already quite a few great projects to support.

Who do they benefit?

People, nature and business can all benefit equally from the innovative system behind biodiversity credits. Projects that focus on high-integrity, transparency and inclusion can support local communities and be an important financial investment for the people who safeguard important ecosystems and peacefully live inside of them. Nature can thrive with clear legal habitat protection and investments into infrastructure that allows species protection.

Businesses on the other side get the opportunity to create positive value by securing important ecosystems, keeping pace with regulatory changes and creating a transparent and positive image! The business around biodiversity is getting more competitive, so it's a great idea for an early investment into a climate- and nature-friendly future!

What makes them different from Carbon Offsets?

Unlike CO₂ offsetting, biodiversity projects protect entire ecosystems, ensuring long-term sustainability. They also create economic opportunities through eco-tourism and sustainable industries, while biodiversity credits provide funding for conservation. In short, biodiversity projects are essential for a thriving planet, balancing ecological health, climate stability, and sustainable development.

But most importantly, they work under the principle of "No Net Loss", ensuring that credits can only be sold when a positive impact can be measured on the project site. While CO₂ offsets compensate for negative impacts, biodiversity credits have an additional positive impact, making them less susceptible to greenwashing!

How can you be a part of this?
